Infection Control for Dental Professionals: Adhering to North Carolina's SPICE Requirements

Statewide Program for Infection and Epidemiology--SPICE 

In North Carolina, every healthcare organization that performs invasive procedures (including injections, finger stick blood sugars) is required to designate a credentialed staff person to receive infection control training and implement an infection control program. The approved infection control curriculum developed by SPICE prepares designated healthcare providers to implement the North Carolina rule, 10A NCAC 41A .0206 INFECTION PREVENTION – HEALTH CARE SETTINGS.


Course Description: 

This course is designed to equip new dental staff members, including dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists, with essential knowledge and practices to effectively oversee infection control activities. In compliance with North Carolina's SPICE program and the NC Administrative Code 10A NCAC 41A .0206, this curriculum covers the mandatory infection control training for dental settings.


Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to: 

  • Apply epidemiologic principles to manage infectious diseases within the dental setting.
  • Implement aseptic techniques and practices consistently.
  • Define and execute proper sterilization, disinfection, and sanitation procedures.
  • Adhere to universal precautions for blood and body fluids to protect patients and staff.
  • Employ engineering controls to minimize the risk of injuries from sharps.
  • Follow protocols for the safe disposal of sharps.
  • Utilize techniques that mitigate the risk of sharp injuries to healthcare workers.
  • Comprehend and comply with additional state laws regarding HIV and Hepatitis B.
