HIPAA Compliance Training for Dental Professionals (2014)

Description

Course Description:

Patient privacy and security requirements for dental professionals are ever-evolving. While training requirements are vague, the Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (HHS-OCR) has reinforced that they expect HIPAA training to be a continual process and that annual training is a ‘minimum’.

Dentists and their workforce (independent contractors and employees) must receive training that is relevant to their job function. This course will outline the fundamentals and latest requirements related to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, and Security Awareness requirements. This course will fulfill the requirements of HB300 (Texas Medical Privacy Act) of 2012.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the Purpose: Learn that the Privacy Rule is in place to protect patients' Protected Health Information (PHI) while allowing secure information exchange for patient care coordination.
  • Patient Rights: Familiarize with patients' rights under the Privacy Rule, including the right to examine and obtain copies of their medical records, request corrections, and restrict health plan access to cash-paid treatments.
  • Exceptions: Recognize that under the Privacy Rule, certain exceptions exist, such as reporting child abuse or neglect and lack of protection for criminal acts like assault or theft.
  • Covered Entities: Identify the entities covered by the Privacy Rule, including health plans, health care clearinghouses, and health care providers transmitting electronic health information under HIPAA standards.
  • Understand the importance of PCI DSS compliance in safeguarding patient payment information and recognize the potential risks associated with non-compliance.
  • Be able to identify the 12 PCI DSS requirements relevant to dental practices and understand their applicability to various roles within the practice.
  • Be equipped with the knowledge to apply best practices for securely handling payment card transactions, and storing, and transmitting patient payment data in dental offices.
